Citizen participation and stakeholder involvement

Stakeholder engagement and consultation of indigenous peoples regarding business projects which affect their communities and culture are often problematic in nature. This paper by the Ethical Investment Research Services (EIRIS) looks at the issue from a business’s perspective, and highlights risks but also opportunities for companies. It also highlights that while most companies they researched had a public commitment to indigenous rights and a commitment to meaningful consultation, only a few companies publicly commitment to the principles of free prior informed consent for all projects.
